The American Board of Laser Surgery

was founded to promote the safe and efficacious use of
lasers and light in medicine and surgery by establishing
standards of acceptable levels of knowledge and competence
through certifying examinations for medical professionals.

Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Cosmetic Laser Procedures

The Board is pleased to offer a Certificate of Added Qualification for ABLS Diplomates practicing Cosmetic Laser and Light Procedures and who meet several additional criteria. This CAQ provides Diplomates a credential that documents further experience and training, and gains additional recognition from the Board, as well as patients and colleagues. This Certificate of Added Qualification is available to any current Diplomate in good standing who meets select criteria including a minimum of 5 years of laser and light clinical experience, 1,000 laser and light medical procedures, and other criteria for education and training. In addition to providing the Board’s recognition, this Certificate provides an additional credential for Diplomates to present to patients, colleagues and supervisory bodies.

Diplomates who have not yet taken and passed the Written Cosmetic Laser Procedures Examination must also prepare for and sit for this examination prior to taking the Special Oral Examination that is required for all CAQ candidates.

The process to earn this Certificate of Added Qualification is a Special Oral Examination with an officer or senior member of the Board following submission of the required advance materials as described below. This Special Oral Examination thoroughly reviews the Diplomate’s more recent clinical practice, education and training. Candidates submit a CAQ Application that includes extensive information about their recent clinical education and training, and provision of before-after case studies/photos, procedure logs and other operational information. The Special Oral Examination will be scheduled at a mutually agreeable date for the Diplomate and Examiner. Examinations are principally conducted via web teleconference; however, Dilpomates may request an in-person examination, if feasible, provided that the candidate pays for his/her travel and any additional costs for the Examiner. The examination itself lasts approximately 90 minutes.

The qualifying requirements are:

  • Completion of the Written Examination in Cosmetic Laser Procedures, if this has not already been taken and passed. Study materials are provided and candidates have up to 6 months to prepare and sit for this written examination.
  • A minimum of 5 consecutive years of performing and supervising cosmetic laser and light procedures.
  • 1,000 total minimum cosmetic laser and light procedures, of which 250 or more must have been performed directly (the remainder may be supervised procedures); an average of approximately 50 procedures must be performed directly each year for the past 5 years.
  • Procedures must be well documented in one or more clinical logs, by op notes and/or procedure flow sheets which can be supplied on request.
  • A minimum 30 hours of direct laser and light oriented CMEs must have been earned in the past 2 years, and documented by certificate or letter of attendance.
  • At least 2 significant laser and light-oriented conferences must have been attended in the past 5 years, documented by certificate or letter of attendance.
  • Three letters of reference must be supplied which attest to the Diplomate’s laser and light clinical skills and experience, with contact information and permission for the Board to follow-up as it may deem appropriate. These must be signed and on letterhead.
  • No unfavorable outcomes of legal actions, or sanctions by regulatory boards or agencies, regarding laser or light therapies or procedures during the past five years.
  • All credentials must be verifiable.

Practitioners who have earned Diplomate status within the past year may apply at one year following the date of their certification. Future Diplomates meeting the qualifications above may apply at the one-year anniversary of their Diplomate status.

An all-inclusive fee of $750 US must be remitted with the CAQ Application Form (download MS Word document), or please email the Board at lasers1060@aol.com for more information.

Please visit this site's Payment page to remit the fee using PayPal Option "N" for $750 US.
